Should we be thinking a little more about what is good for children?

The Guardian published the following article last week (click here) which raises some interesting points, most notably that OFSTED, the schools inspectorate in the UK, loves the idea. There is much being said about character education in the UK at the moment, which is great. Stowe School are hosting a conference in January 2017 (click here) which looks interesting. Some schools and organisations have been doing these things for years and their pupils have benefited. Although it is not always tangible or measurable (in a world where we feel we have to measure and compare everything), the benefits of character education are individual and might only be recognised sometime in the future.

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

I can across this poem the other day and enjoyed it, maybe you will as well...

The Summer Day
Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean- the one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eating sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down- who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?
—Mary Oliver

Making me think....

There is nothing like going through a rigourous interview process for a job that you really would like to do, to get you to take stock of the important things in your life. While change is good and is often needed to move on, there is always the worry that you are doing the right thing.  So changes are happening in the next five months and we will have to find new routines.

Learning to Dislike

This is a very interesting statement. There is much truth in this statement, but we as adults and parents have much to answer for when we raise our children. Throw away comments can have such a last affect on young people. I really need to think more carefully about my own words.
